front door wood stain colors

hi, teri masaschi in the finishing shop. we have an oak door here to finish and it's very high quality raised panel got the molded edge around each paneland it's an interior door so we're going to actually stain it and then put awater-based coating on top of it

front door wood stain colors, supposedly this store has been sandedfactory about 180 i am not happy with that i mean i can still feel where it needssome additional sanding and everywhere that the stile and rail meetthey're

not exactly flat and flush so i wannado some additional sanding to prepare this door begin with a flexible 220sponge to sand the curves of the raised panels the thick or the thin sponges make forfast progress power sand the upperparts of thestyle and rail pieces with 220 flatten the joints use the maroonpads to scrub and smooth the profiled edge around theraised panels tack off all of the dust

begin staining by working inward on thepanels and progress to the outside of the door apply thoroughly and wipe off all the excess use acombination of ragging the stain on and brushing the door is suspended onbig long bolts across saw horses this allows the door tobe flipped and stained while the other side isdrying once the stain is dry tack off lightly brush on a coat of the water basefinish: be mindful of brushstrokes smooth andtip of the wet finish to remove any

puddles or brush stroke marks the water-basedfinish is ready to scuff with 320 in just a few hours the finishingblock works well on the flats used the gray scrub pad to smooth curvedor profiled surfaces the gray pad is finer then the maroon pad tack off and apply a second coat be as careful about brushing directionas the first coat tip off lightly and quickly two to threecoats done in the same process should be adequate protection while the oak door isdrying

the other door i wanna get done is this pine door unlike the oak door i'm notputting a clear finish on it i'm gonna paint it and ithas some issues it's not ready for paint it has some gapshere and here and those do not cover withpaint you must fill those gaps in order to geta really smooth beautiful surface so we're gonna put some spackle in there very easy to do get that in there and get it drying

get some down the side here becauseyou'll still be able to see that gap down the side and then once again we've got some issues that i'm not happy about becausethis is not flush this one is proud compared tothis one and then for sanding these raised panelsare different than the oak door is that they've got this little detail here youcan get a sanding sponge in there so you're gonna have to rely on the purple non-woven material to get thatsmoothed down

inside here these flat areas you can do with yourfinishing block no problem and then the outer stile and rail we're gonna use this random orbit sander with 180 and then 220 after everything's prepared we'll prime and then we'll paint now make sure youunderstand that a painted surface deserves the same kind of care as aclear coat the painted surface is actually gonnashow up more defects so you need to be

very very good about your preparation of this surface so it looksreally beautiful and flawless over fill the cracks with the spackle hand sand the panels power sand the upper frame of the door prime the door by brushing the producton thin but thoroughly avoid stroke marks and puddles a heavy coat does not meanbetter priming it will just be more work to smooth itdown

tack off and apply the first coat ofpaint pay attention to the direction of yourbrush strokes allow to dry scuff with 320 tack off and apply the second coat aspristinely as possible the doors are done and they're beautiful they are now ready tohang it was a complicated process doing theseby hand because you've got all of this moldinghere and then here so you have to be cautiousof drips and sags

working flat like this helped a lot andworking with this paint was very very

front door wood stain colors

painstaking because you have to be verycareful of your brush strokes which way they go but it was worth it we're now ready tohave a couple beautiful doors in our home
