- having hair like mineit's easy to get addicted to products but over time i've learned to love and embrace natural hair. (funky music) - hey guys, it's kirbs, welcome to pretty unfiltered.
living proof color treated hair, today's guest is megz, hey megz, how you doing? - i'm doing good. how are you? - i'm good, thanks for coming.
- thank you. - so you guys know megz because she has an amazing youtube channelwith beauty tutorials, hair and makeup, alsothey're really insightful and funny, she is notafraid to speak her mind and just do her thing and she has had us laughing on set, (chuckles)all the producers, dp, everyone is cracking up over here so i have a feeling thisis not only going to be
a very insightful videobut also pretty fun too. - it's always fun when i'm here, huh?- [kirbie] it's always fun. she's a little ball of fun. (laughing) so we're gonna talk about your hair which is something that'snear and dear to you. but i wanna start from the beginning. - okay. - i know everyone has they're own issues
with their hair from time to time, whether it was cuttingit weird and whatnot but, when it comes to you, you are so used to testing out different productsand different treatments and things like thatand you decided to go, like au natural with your hair. - yes, just recently, because i was chemically treating my hair. - you were relaxing it right?- [megz] i was relaxing it.
i was relaxing it everysince i was like, 15. - wow. - i was like, hey, i wannawear my hair straight all the time, i'm tired of flat-ironing it and putting all this heat in it, so my mom said, "okay, you guys are old enough, "you take care of your own hair." and, that we thought we were. (chuckling) we thought we were taking care of our hair
but we really weren't. so that was the firsttime i got my relaxer. i was chemically-treated everysince then, until recently. for those that don'tknow, what are relaxers? like, how do you relax your hair? - so, naturally my hair is kinky, curly, fluffy, and just lovable, as it is, so when i chemically relax it, it's a chemical treatmentthat i put onto my hair
to chemically straighten my hair forever. so in order to, basically, get rid of the relaxer, if i don't want it anymore, i'm gonna have to grow it out and cut it off. - [kirbie] wow.- it's very similar to, when you color your hair,- [kirbie] yep. - and your roots grow out and like, oh, say i'm blonde andi'm brown at the roots. i have to retouch that upso it can match everything
else that i have--- [kirbie] totally. - going on. - and so if you if you wannaget rid of your relaxer you literally just haveto grow out your hair, cut it off, right? - yeah and that's whati'm doing right now. - oh, oh you are like goinggoing from ground-zero. - yes and i'm done. - damn girl.
- i'm finnish. - that is crazy. so when you color yourhair, it's not that painful and i've never relaxed my hair so i generally don't know this, are relaxers painful? do they hurt? - relaxers can be painful,- [kirbie] okay. - because it's a very strong chemical
in that relaxer kit, whether it's done by a professional or at home. basically before you relax your hair you, when you know you're gonna retouch, you can't scratch your scalp,- [kirbie] oh my gosh. - or you can't reallysweat because that moisture will aggravate the scalp,so say for example, it's time for your retouch and you start to put therelaxer onto your new growth
and you could burn your scalp, so say if you're like, oh- [kirbie] because of the - it's itchy right here.- [kirbie] chemicals, yeah. - i'm gonna relax my hair, even like the slightest littlescratch can really burn and cause like a chemical burn, on your scalp if it's done incorrectly. - what influenced you towanna have the straight hair? i know you said that you didn't wanna
straighten it anymore, with a flat iron, but was there somethingthat you saw in the media or was there a personthat you were inspired by, that you were like, youknow what, i want her hair? - a lot of my family, they're from the south and they're older, they older generation, they're used to pressing it out, so they kind of lookedat it as if your hair isn't at least curled or straightened, or,
you're hair's not done. (chuckling) - got it, yeah, so - so it's kind of like- [kirbie] it's very formal. - looking done, like ooh youneed to get your hair done. it's time to get your hair done. - honey, that is my mom with these roots. what made you decideyou wanted to natural? i wanted to go natural because i wanted to go back to that lookof what i had before,
you know, if i want to blow it out, i'll have full hair that i don't have to worry about retouching it all the time. - how long is the relaxing process? - so for me, i would self-relax, so if you're a do-it-yourself it could take anywhere from two hours to four hours because i was on a relaxed hair journey so i would do coconut oil treatments
and deep treatments, andit would take forever because, you know i have pretty long, relaxed hair so i'm like i have to love it all the way down to the tips of my hair. - exactly. did it cause any damage to your hair? - no, i didn't personallyhave damage to my hair, like say for example, irelax my hair and like, oh my goodness, it's falling out
in the sink, right then and there, i haven't had that, but i've heard people who've had that- [kirbie] gone through it. - happen, like my sister, she did it to herself. one time she left it on too long, - oh no.- [megz] now that's another thing, if you leave it on too long, sometimes it may not burn,- [kirbie] yeah. - you know if you leave it on too long
you could have some hair loss. - you mentioned that you had dealt with some hair loss though. what was that from? - i actually deal withhair loss due to stress. - really? - yeah, and when i'm stressed out it'll kind of shed out in clumps, and that was kind oflike the original reason
why i started my hair journey, because it was thinning out. i was so stressed. i was just, i don't knowwhy i was so stressed about? - okay, so tell us what the status of your hair journey right now. - okay, so, i haven't had a relaxer since january of 2016.- [kirbie] yes girl. - so i'm really excited to, you know,
be growing out my hair. i have a mini 'fro rightnow. (breathy laugh) - you're so cute.- [megz] underneath my protective style. - okay and so, protective style, explain what that means. - so this is my protective style. it's a wig.- [kirbie] yep. - and when you're transitioning
you can't really manipulatetoo much into your hair because you have two different textures, so i have curly, curlygirl hair under here, and then i have straight hair so i can't reallymanipulate too much into it because it'll break off,- [kirbie] yep. - and i wanna keep my hairas healthy as possible. when i do decide i wannasnatch this thing off, you know, it'll be, it'llbe nice underneath there.
- exactly, i'm so excited to see it. and you'll be doing a reveal right? like on your channel?- [megz] yeah. - we'll be seeing all that go down soon? - yeah, i'm not sureif i wanna do a reveal or do updates. - do updates. - because i can stretchout, like right now, it comes like, likethe end of my ear here.
so it's growing. - that's awesome. - you know, doing those treatments and taking care of yourhair, it just does wonders. - what is your advice forwomen out there who are considering embracingtheir natural hair texture? for me it was more so justtaking myself as i am. you know i was justtired of doing all these extra things to get myhair to look a certain way
instead of just embracinghow it naturally grows. i'm like, just let it be free megan. why are you doing all that extra-ness? - yeah and i (laughing), - extra-ness.- [megz] extra-ness. - and i think that's a good lesson too. it's like embrace your natural beauty. embrace what you already have. you are good enough withwhat you already have.
so megz, tell everybodywhere we can find you. - you can find me on social media at ulovemegz, that's u-l-o-v-e-m-e-g-z and that's on instagram, twitter, youtube and i think that is about it. - and you know what? this girl's gonna haveher own television show at some point, because she is so funny and i just feel like you're a little like,
star on the rise, like you're about to just take over the world. - you know we're gonnatake over the world-- - [kirbie] let's do it--- one day - [kirbie] (mumbling)- at a time. - just do the diva, the thank you. thank you. - no i just, one day at a time.
