"big story." ariann anderson: "it's just a reminder that
what are the colors of gay pride, the hate is still out there." you'll find
anything but hate behind these walls-- as wind dances over these chimes -- and allows this flag to flutter: few
would think "hate" as they look at ariann and jess meadows- anderson-- but this flag is new -- new because the
original was stolen and burned sunday morning-- jess: strange. ariann: very strange. ariann: "it goes beyond
being vandalism or theft. that's a direct attack!" police say 23- year-old cameron mayfield seen here stole the
flag, set it on fire and ran through the neighbor hood-- his father tells me mayfield recently lost
his job, and had been drinking that night-- adding: it's not like him to do something like this-- it's a surprise
to the anderson's mayfield live just down the road-- you can actually see the new gay pride flag
from where his van is parked-- jess: "you feel bad for a minute, he's a young man and he made a hate-filled, drunken
mistake that is going to have a lasting effect on his life." meanwhile, the anderson's are trying to focus back on their own
lives! married in iowa back in 20-11, the two are anxiously awaiting a local judge's decision that could allow
them to get state-- until then, they have no plans to take down the flag -- instead, they tell me they'll ignore the
hate-- arian: "it's just the fact that it still exists." and hope for better news... tonight, it's not good news for mayfield--
we're live outside the jail where he remains tonight -- his dad tells me he'll remain here until his next hearing!
he says wasn't trying to be hateful, but that it was only a coincidence that he burned the flag... the dad tells
me he expects one of the first things he'll do is apologize to the couple upon his release-- reporting live
with photographer marcel hollis denker, i'm matthew smith -- wowt 6 news. mayfield is charged with 2nd degree
felony arson--- and resisting arrest. police say when they first made contact with him-- he tried
to run-- and
then struggled with officers.
